| 551 | OCCUPATION: Actress BIOGRAPHY: "Aunt Fern" was an actress. Did stage work in New York where she married Harry DeWitt Carey. Fern Foster was the first wife of silent cowboy star Harry Carey, whom she co-starred with in his play "Two Women and that Man" on Broadway. The play, which opened at the Majestic Theatre on October 18, 1909. Fern followed Harry into motion pictures, making her film debut in "His Day" (1912). Harry began his evolution into a star, appearing in films for director D. W. Griffith at Biograph, and in 1914, he cast Fern in two movies he wrote and directed for the Progressive Motion Picture Co., The Master Cracksman (1914) and McVeagh of the South Seas (1914). Fern Foster retired from the movies after making the two pictures with her husband. Harry later divorced Fern and married his co-star in his well known "Cheyenne Harry" Westerns, Olive Golden (Olive Carey), in 1920. According to Mom (Laura A. Foster - Irving), Fern's complexion was a little dark which made it difficult to film with the old black and white movie film technology of the day. Therefore, she never made it in films. In correspondence from Harry Carey Jr. Fern and Harry were married for only six years (seems right; 1908-1914). Harry Jr. also said that an actor friend, Wendell Corey, performed in some summer stock performances with Fern Foster. Wendell said she was a very good actress. This indicates that after she left Harry Carey she continued acting, probably as a part time occupation. Suspect that her first name is Alma, and that Fern is her middle name. Her burial record gives her name as Alma Fern Foster Harms. There is a 1930 Census record for Chicago, IL which might be the Harms (Harry W. and Fern). That census records Fern's first marriage age being 23, which implies she married Harry Carey in 1908. The Internet Movie Database (IMDb.com) includes data on Fern Foster and first husband Harry Carey BURIAL: grave site visited 26 Nov 2010; there is no marker for Fern or husband (Mr. Harry Harms) | Foster, Fern (I43)

| 566 | One of Beach P. Seely's daughters married a Archibald K. Dougherty, but we don't know which Seely daughter it was. According to this newspaper notice in The Head Quarters of Fredericton, York county on July 6, 1859: m. St. John, 27th ult., by Rev. James Baird, Archibald K. DOUGHERTY / Miss d/o late Beach P. SEELY of Carleton. The 1881 census lists a Margaret A. Dougherty who is a 40 year old widow living in the James McRae household in Woodstock, Carleton, New Brunswick, Canada. So it is possible Archibald married Margaret Seely. | Seely, Beach Peters (I918)

| 585 | Passenger list for ship Hercules lists Nathaniel, wife Lydia, seven children and seven servants. One of his servants might have been Edward Foster (RIN 1387). On the slopes of Third Cliff, overlooking the marshes of the North River, Nathaniel Tilden, one of the Men of Kent, established the first farmstead [of Scituate] in 1626. (Records indicate that Nathaniel had previously visited Scituate in 1627/8 since there is a copy of a deed of sale of land dated 1628). He apparently returned to England and brought his family back later. Nathaniel was amongst the Pilgrim founders and governing elders of Scituate, MA. The town of Scituate (from Indian meaning "cold brook") was founded by Timothy Hatherly who later married Nathaniel's widow Lydia. | Tilden, Nathaniel (I103)
